  65.                    AUTO-PC    OVERVIEW

  69.     AUTO-PC provides AUTOMATIC SCHEDULED PC PROCESSING for IBM PCs and
  70.     compatibles.

  72.     With AUTO-PC, backups, host communications, local and wide area network
  73.     distribution, and your favorite PC software can be scheduled for
  74.     execution when it is required or convenient.

  76.     AUTOMATIC:
  77.  
  78.         AUTO-PC automatically performs scheduled PC processing
  79.         requiring no user interaction at the AUTO-PC workstation.
  80.         The user simply leaves the AUTO-PC workstation on and all
  81.         scheduled processing is automatic.  Scheduled processing
  82.         consists of one or more batch files, programs, and/or keystroke
  83.         playback sessions called a "JOB".  Each JOB is scheduled to
  84.         perform the required processing at the appropriate time.

  86.         AUTO-PC has two automatic processing modes, resident and
  87.         online.

  89.         AUTO-PC in resident mode is a terminate and stay resident (TSR)
  90.         program that determines when it is time for the next scheduled
  91.         JOB to take place.  If the IBM PC workstation is at the DOS
  92.         prompt the TSR automatically calls on AUTO-PC to execute the
  93.         scheduled processing.  If a user at the IBM PC workstation is
  94.         currently in an application the TSR displays a POP-UP window to
  95.         inform the user that it is time for a scheduled JOB to occur.
  96.         When the workstation user exits the application to DOS the
  97.         scheduled processing will automatically be performed.  This
  98.         allows for processing to be scheduled for any time during a
  99.         normal work day.

  101.         AUTO-PC in online mode determines when it is time for the next
  102.         scheduled JOB to take place and automatically performs the JOB
  103.         processing.  This mode allows the workstation user to monitor
  104.         the status of all scheduled JOBS.  AUTO-PC in online mode
  105.         displays the Job Name and the next scheduled time each JOB will
  106.         be performed.  Also displayed is a running success and failure
  107.         count for JOBS that have been processed.  When the user sees
  108.         that a failure has occurred he/she can review an AUTO-PC audit
  109.         log to determine problem correction.

  111.     SCHEDULED:
  112.  
  113.         AUTO-PC provides extensive scheduling capabilities.  Scheduling
  114.         can be performed on a CYCLIC, PERIODIC, or EXACT basis for each
  115.         JOB.

  117.         With cyclic scheduling, PC processing can be performed on an
  118.         hourly, daily, and/or weekly basis.  For example: Every day of
  119.         the week at 3:00 AM.

  125.         With periodic scheduling, PC processing can be performed on a
  126.         monthly basis.    Periodic scheduling allows for a last day of
  127.         the month selection for end of the month processing.  For
  128.         example:  Every month on the 15th and last day of the month at
  129.         11:03 PM.

  131.         With exact scheduling, PC processing can be performed at
  132.         specific times.  For example: June 15th 1990 at 10:00 PM and
  133.         September 15th 1990 at 3:12 AM.  Exact scheduling is useful for
  134.         annual, semi-annual, and quarterly processing.    Exact scheduling
  135.         is also useful for special cases like the 2nd Thursday of each
  136.         month.

  138.         For cyclic and periodic schedules, AUTO-PC provides exception
  139.         scheduling.  With exception scheduling, the user selects days
  140.         of the year that may be processing exceptions, i.e. company
  141.         holidays.  For periodic scheduling Saturdays and Sundays can be
  142.         included as exceptions.  With AUTO-PC's exceptions schedule,
  143.         processing can be shifted to the previous work day, shifted to
  144.         the next work day, not performed at all, or performed as
  145.         scheduled.

  147.         Cyclic example: Insurance agents at remote offices need to
  148.         upload new policy information for processing on the mainframe at
  149.         the end of each workday.  Cyclic scheduling is selected and set
  150.         for Monday through Friday at 8:00 PM, with "Do not perform on
  151.         Holidays" selected from the exception schedule.

  153.         Periodic example: A large firm with many remote offices
  154.         performs payroll on the 15th and last day of the month.  If the
  155.         15th or last day of the month is a Holiday, Saturday, or Sunday
  156.         then employees are paid the previous work day.    The firm needs
  157.         to send payroll data to the remote offices where checks will be
  158.         printed.  Periodic scheduling is selected and set for the 15th
  159.         and last day of the month at 4:00 AM, with "Perform on previous
  160.         work day if Holiday" , "Perform on previous work day if
  161.         Saturday", and "Perform on previous work day if Sunday" selected
  162.         from the exception schedule.

  164. JOB PROCESSING:
  165.  
  166.         AUTO-PC entries are called "JOBS".  Each Job can consist of
  167.         three different processing types called "JOB ENTRIES".  Each
  168.         JOB can have one or more or the following entry types: Batch
  169.         Files, Programs, or Keystroke Playback sessions.
  170.         (1). Batch File execution is performed by using the DOS command
  171.         processor (COMMAND.COM).  Any batch file that can be executed
  172.         from the DOS command line can be processed by AUTO-PC.    AUTO-PC
  173.         comes with a special program (JOBSTAT.EXE) to be used within
  174.         batch files.  This program informs AUTO-PC of batch file success
  175.         or failure.  This program is used along with the DOS errorlevel
  176.         indicator.  (2). Although a PC program can be executed from a
  177.         batch file or with a keystroke playback session, AUTO-PC allows
  178.         a program to be directly executed.  AUTO-PC will set the JOB
  179.         status indicator by checking the exit code that the program
  180.         returns to DOS.  (3).  AUTO-PC features keystroke capture and
  181.         playback for PC programs that require user input to be entered.
  182.         Once a keystroke capture session has been performed, it can be
  183.         entered into a JOB for scheduled playback.

  263.        to ensure the processing will be performed.  This feature allows
  264.        for a specified number of RE-TRIES at a specified interval.  This

  266.        host system or network is down or dial-up lines are busy.

  274.        the log for specific JOB processing, and most importantly view all
